Hope Rising from the Brick Kilns
Bringing Hope, Torah Education, and Humanitarian Support to Families Trapped in Bonded Labor
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Throughout Pakistan, particularly in Punjab province, thousands of vulnerable families face the harsh realities of bonded labor within the brick kiln industry. Many families become trapped in cycles of debt that can continue for generations, leaving parents and children working under extremely difficult conditions with little opportunity for freedom or financial independence.
The Hope Rising from the Brick Kilns project is a collaborative outreach initiative between The Way Fellowship USA, represented by ED Doss, and Torah Fellowship of Pakistan, represented by Asif Joseph.
This ministry focuses on supporting brick kiln workers, especially children, women, and Believers’ families, through Torah teaching, basic education, spiritual encouragement, and humanitarian assistance.
By providing food, clothing, daily necessities, and opportunities to study Scripture, the project seeks to bring hope, dignity, and encouragement to families living under conditions of exploitation and hardship.
WHAT WE DO
- Torah Teaching and Spiritual Fellowship: Provide opportunities for brick kiln families to gather for worship, study Scripture, and receive biblical teaching and encouragement.
- Humanitarian Assistance: Help provide essential food supplies, clothing, and daily necessities to families facing extreme poverty and difficult working conditions.
- Children’s Education and Support: Encourage basic education and literacy opportunities for children whose circumstances often prevent regular school attendance.
- Women’s Outreach and Encouragement: Offer compassionate support, spiritual guidance, and opportunities for empowerment to women facing economic hardship, discrimination, and exploitation.
- Family and Community Engagement: Build relationships with workers and their families, listen to their concerns, and identify practical needs.
- Awareness of Bonded Labor: Help raise awareness of the challenges facing brick kiln workers, including generational debt, child labor, unsafe working conditions, and limited access to legal protections.
UNDERSTANDING THE BRICK KILN CRISIS
The Cycle of Bonded Labor
Bonded labor, also known as debt bondage, occurs when individuals are required to work to repay loans or financial advances.
In Pakistan’s brick kiln industry, impoverished workers may borrow money from kiln owners to cover emergencies such as medical expenses, weddings, or other essential needs.
These advances, commonly called peshgi, can become difficult or impossible to repay because of excessive interest, low wages, and deductions imposed by employers.
As debts accumulate, entire families may become dependent on kiln owners, with children sometimes inheriting the financial obligations of their parents.
Working Conditions and Exploitation
According to the Bricks Kiln Outreach Report, workers may experience:
- Workdays extending 12–18 hours in extreme heat.
- Children working alongside parents instead of attending school.
- Wages withheld or reduced through debt deductions.
- Limited access to healthcare, education, and legal assistance.
- Physical and psychological abuse, with women and girls facing additional risks of exploitation.
- Fear of retaliation when attempting to leave bonded employment.
These conditions create significant barriers to education, economic independence, and family stability.
The Impact on Believers’ Families
Believers’ families represent a small religious minority within Pakistan but face disproportionate hardship in some brick kiln communities.
The report identifies discrimination, limited employment opportunities, unequal treatment, and barriers to legal protection as additional challenges faced by these families.
For many, poverty and social marginalization make escaping debt bondage particularly difficult.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
This project is a collaborative effort dedicated to Torah teaching and humanitarian outreach among vulnerable brick kiln communities in Pakistan.
For information about project needs, donation arrangements, ministry reports, or individual case studies, visitors are encouraged to contact the project coordinators directly.
Pray for the Ministry
Pray for the children, women, and families living under difficult working conditions. Ask Yah for protection, provision, strength, and opportunities for freedom from exploitation.
Pray also for ED Doss, Asif Joseph, and the ministry partners serving these communities, that they may receive wisdom, encouragement, and the resources needed to continue their outreach.
Support Practical Needs
Help provide essential resources such as food, clothing, educational supplies, and daily necessities for vulnerable brick kiln families.
Practical assistance can help ease immediate hardships while supporting the ministry’s continued engagement with these communities.
Strengthen Torah Education
Support opportunities for Torah teaching, worship, Scripture study, and basic education among brick kiln workers and their families.
Biblical instruction and educational opportunities can provide spiritual encouragement while helping children and adults develop knowledge and skills for the future.
